What does 20/20 vision actually mean?

What does it mean when you have got 20/20 Vision? 20/20 Vision is a term coined from an in office test to determine visual acuity or clarity of vision.  If we're getting technical, the term 2020 actually refers to the size of a letter, a person can read when they are 20 feet away.   When you walk into the exam room, and you see the Big E on the top of the chart, that's a 2200 letter. The next line down is 2100 and so on and so forth until you get to that small 2020 line, which is actually optimal vision that we check for in the exam. When patients have trouble seeing smaller letters on the eye chart, glasses and contacts can be prescribed to correct vision to a point where the 2020 line becomes focused.  Measuring visual acuity is important, and is used as a way for your eye doctor to standardize how you're seeing over time.  It can be used as a comparison tool from exam date to exam date.  For example, if you saw 2020 last year, and you're seeing the 2030 ...

Can supplements improve eye health?

Things we can do to slow the progression or prevent AMD is much longer often than the things that we can't control like our genes or what stage of macular degeneration we happen to have at some point. We all know its important to avoid excessive sunlight wear sunglasses not smoke.  But nutrition matters, clinical trials tells us that how diet and lifestyles can influence our risk for inflammation oxidative stress high blood lipids and high blood pressure which we know promote conditions like AMD also some of our indormation comes from population studies like what we conduct which is able to provide information about the potential effects of various diets over longer periods of time than can be tested in clinical trials and in a greater variety of people and pick up clues about some of the aspects of nutrition that may not yet be studied in clinical trials. The data suggests that nutrition can matter a lot in studies.  If we eat enough lutein, it absorbs blue light which can ot...

In short LASIK surgery has worn off. Is this true? Does LASIK surgery really wear off? or is there another reason why vision changes and these patients start needing glasses to see their best so what actualy happens is that there are actually two focusing structures of the eye, the cornea and the lens. Lasik surgery modifies the performance of the cornea but the lens inside the eye continues to age and as we grow older the lens loses its flexibility it grows larger in size and eventually it turns cloudy in a proces...
