The prescriptions of kids change rapidly and so the frequency of visit to the optometrist increase accordingly One must get their eyes checked at different frequencies at different age groups  Let us see: A  baby’s  first eye exam should be at around 6 months old and this exam should  take place at every six months interval up to  two years of age  between 3 and 5, the child should get an eye exam at least once  from 6 to 18 the child should have yearly eye  exams  Young adults from 18 to 39 years old  should  get an eye exam annually  Middle-aged adults and old age groups should also get an eye exam...

Let us learn some Do’s  and Don'ts about out managing glasses: Dont’s Never use your shirt trail to clean the glasses Never use coarse material for cleaning your glasses namely tissues or paper towels as they are  very much prone to minor scratches so your glasses may lose clarity over time  Don't use products with acetone(the commonest product that contains acetone is a nail polish remover)on your glasses in an attempt to clean them, acetone, when left on the surface of plastic or glass, can surprisingly be more destructive than you might think Never use your own saliva to  clean your glasse...

What is Blindness

WHO  defines Blindness as the visual acuity in the better eye to be less than 3/60(Snellen's or equivalent) or in the absence of visual acuity chart, blindness is the inability to count fingers in daylight at a distance of 3 m( to indicate less than 3/60  or its equivalent)  In simple words the term blindness is the inability to perceive light, there are more than 60 definitions of blindness all throughout the world and they differ widely.  In clinical practice we consider a person to be blind when his BCVA  is less than 3/60 or visual field is less than 10 degrees in diameter or 5 degrees from the center of fixation.  A low vision person not fulfilling this criterion shall be not called blind instead, he will be termed as a low vision patient.  Low vision taken together with blindness represents all Visual impairment now let us classify Visual impairment in some categories: Let us understand some key features in distinguishing the blind from a low vi...

What is Visual acuity?

Visual Acuity is defined as the smallest retinal image that can be appreciated and it is measured by the smallest object that can be seen at a distance.  The vision or visual perception is a complex integration of light sense, form sense, contrast sense, and color sense. visual acuity is considered a measure of form sense so it refers  to the spatial limit of visual discrimination  To get a firm grip on  understanding visual acuity we must learn about the visual angle  It is the angle is subtended at the nodal point of the eyes by the physical dimensions of the object in the visual field, it is a very useful and convenient mode of specifying the spatial extent of objects or elements in the visual field. So now let us define visual acuity in terms of visual  angle  The visual acuity is defined as the reciprocal of the minimum resolvable visual angle measured in minutes of arc. There is a clinical definition of visual acuity as well, it states that visua...

What is Astigmatism ?

It is arguably one of the most common refractive errors and is something most of us probably have to some degree. The most simple way to explain astigmatism is basically that the structures within the eye are not perfectly round in simple words there are a little bit warped and because of that it causes light to bend or refract a little bit uneven inside of the eye and that causes your vision to be blurred and distorted. However, the good news is that astigmatism isn't actually a disease, it is just a condition that we can correct with glasses, contact lenses, and even eye surgeries like LASIK. Now to better explain what  astigmatism is  let us learn about the Cornea    It is the window through which light enters the eye And it protects the inside of the eye from its outer environment it is also a refracting surface that bends light towards the inner eye in an ideal world it is smooth and evenly curved so that the light passes through in a uniform fashion however mos...
