The answer to this question cannot be answered in one word.
It depends on several factors which determine the rate at which you should visit your optometrist and get your prescription changed.
It is a general recommendation by every optometrist for a regular eye check-up now regular means at a period of 1 year. The prescriptions of kids change rapidly and so the frequency of visit to the optometrist increase accordingly
One must get their eyes checked at different frequencies at different age groups
Let us see:
A baby’s first eye exam should be at around 6 months old and this exam should take place at every six months interval up to two years of age
between 3 and 5, the child should get an eye exam at least once
from 6 to 18 the child should have yearly eye exams
Young adults from 18 to 39 years old should get an eye exam annually
Middle-aged adults and old age groups should also get an eye exam once a year
These above-mentioned guidelines are only applicable to an individual not experiencing any serious vision problems
Signs when you should visit your optometrist:
Blurriness in vision- let's say you haven't changed glasses in years and the current prescription is not sufficient to give you a 6/6 vision and you are experiencing difficulties in reading writing or doing computer work, you should consider visiting your optometrist
Inability to focus on an object- there are problems like convergence insufficiency or accommodation insufficiency where a person might face difficulties in locating/ focusing an object at close, if such conditions bother you then you should visit your optometrist
Headaches- there are more than 200 causes of headaches one of the most common cause is an uncorrected refractive error, even if your headache is not due to an uncorrected refractive error your optometrist will refer you to a specialist to rule out other causes like migraine.
Double vision- it is a sign that your eye muscles aren’t working as they are supposed to and you might require a prism prescription in addition to vision therapy, consider making an appointment with your optometrist if you face so.
Damaged glasses- This one of the most common reasons people visit their optometrist
Squinting your eyes in order to reduce blur -Let's say you partly close your eyes and you can see clear or squinting makes a significant reduction in blurriness, Well that would temporarily get your job done but this is harmful to your eyes and will lead to subsequent headaches and eye aches. You should visit your optometrist if you face such problems.
If these are the conditions you are facing it is time to visit your optometrist for an eye checkup
and to get a new pair of glasses.
