Benefits of Prosthetic Eyes
So let's talk about some of the benefits that a prosthetic eye could offer you:
1) Prosthetic eyes can bring back confidence.
2) Iris colors can be matched pretty well.
3) It can even move to a certain limit as compared to a normal eye.
4) Sometimes lid surgeries may be needed to help match the eyelid up and then there are some times where especially with trauma or cancers that things can cause it can lead to damage to the eyelid and the surrounding tissues. Also in these cases the outcomes are tremendous.
Generally a prosthetic eye lasts about five to seven years.
It should be cleaned and polished every 3 to six months to keep it in nice shape.
How prosthetic eyes are made?
- It is usually made up of hard acrylic plastic which is shaped in a form of shell.
- The prosthetic eye fits over an ocular implant.
- Your eye professional will take an impression of your socket in a little impression tray.
- Its like a little plastic tray with lots of little holes in and then the other tube that comes out the front and then it is mixed up with an impression cream.
- This ocular implant is a hard rounded device that is surgically embedded deeper in the eye socket.
- The real artificial eye (prosthesis) is made in about 6-8 weeks.
Prosthetic eyes are an excellent solution for restoring confidence and appearance after eye loss. It's fascinating how they are custom-made to match the iris and fit comfortably over an ocular implant.
